Satisfaction with the signs of openness shown by EU authorities towards the requests made by San Marino Government

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces with satisfaction that EU Authorities have promptly accepted the request made by San Marino Government to formally allow the transit of San Marino citizens, as well as non-European citizens residing in San Marino, through the borders of EU Member States, for their repatriation to the Republic. As known, in order to contain the spread of Covid-19 outbreak, since 17 March last, the external borders of the EU have been closed, allowing only for the return home of EU citizens).

Yesterday, a specific communication on the above was issued by the EU Commission.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, addressing Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, in ensuring the proximity of the EU to the institutions and people of San Marino at this time of global health emergency, has also guaranteed specific support by the Consular Affairs Section of the European External Action Service (EEAS), so that our fellow citizens still located abroad can exceptionally benefit, where there is no San Marino diplomatic/consular representation on the spot, from consular assistance also from an EU Member State other than Italy. Italian offices have already been ensuring assistance to San Marino citizens on the basis of conventional provisions in force for many years and, during this health emergency, they have been very helpful in coordination with the Italian Embassy to San Marino.

President Michel also informed that, in order to allow a smooth and rapid movement of medical supplies, the EU has excluded San Marino from the scope of Regulation 2020/402, which makes such movement subject to the granting of an specific authorisation.

In thanking the European Commission for the above, the Minister is also grateful to the Department of Foreign Affairs and to the San Marino Diplomatic Mission in Brussels for the unceasing and fruitful work done daily to deal with the emergency.
