International Remembrance Day: Commemoration Ceremony

On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, a commemoration ceremony of the tragic events will be held on Sunday, 27 January at 11.30 a.m. at Vicolo dei Forni (Contrada Santa Croce, in the heart of the historical centre of San Marino), in the presence of Their Excellencies the Captains Regent, H.E. Mirko Tomassoni and H.E. Alberto Selva. After a speech by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Fiorenzo Stolfi, a memorial stone in memory of the Holocaust and its victims will be unveiled.
The stone created upon a proposal advanced by “Federation of the Republic of San Marino” of the National Association of Italian War Soldiers and Veterans, was carved in the stone of Mount Titano by the stonecutters of the Public Works State Corporation and has been significantly placed on a part of the building which in the ancient past was the centre of the Jewish community in San Marino.
The ceremony will be attended by diplomatic and consular Representative of Israel, Italy and Austria, as well as by Authorities, Guests and San Marino Representatives.
The ceremony will also be attended by Mrs. Susan Soyinka and Stephen Fowler, grandchildren of the Consul General of San Marino in Austria, Friedrich Smetana, Austrian citizen of Jewish origin, who died in tragic circumstances as most of his family in relation to the tragedy of the Shoah. His figure will be commemorated during the Official Audience granted by the Captains Regent.
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Fiorenzo Stolfi, has underlined that “the government, institutions and people of the Republic of San Marino have been deeply involved in and committed to the celebration of this second edition of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. Numerous and significant initiatives at cultural and civil level have been organised to renew the sympathy and solidarity towards the victims of prosecutions and the refugees, which are an inherent feature of this Republic and have been shown over the centuries in many important occasions and have received appreciation and recognition at international level.
These sentiments still guide many of the decisions which our Country expresses in international fora and have inspired the its action during the recent San Marino Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. During the Chairmanship a strong momentum was given to the promotion of dialogue among cultures and religions, as a fundamental foundation for peace defence and construction”.
