San Marino celebrates the World Food Day
The Republic of San Marino is also going to celebrate, on October 16th, the World Food Day, which is organized every year by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in order to celebrate the anniversary of its founding and raise awareness on the world hunger problem. The World Day, which also marks the FAO 64th Anniversary, will be officially celebrated during the 35th Session of the Committee for Food Security, which is going to take place from 14 to 17 October and will revolve around the theme: “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis” . Jacques Diouf, Director-General of FAO – keynote Speaker at the investiture ceremony of the Captains Regent this past October 1st, stressed, in his note sent to all the Member Countries of the Organization, the importance of this event: “the theme of which this year provides an opportunity to reflect and remember that the International community must take coordinated steps to combat the negative effects of a weakened global economy on the poorest countries in the world and their peoples. Diouf also called upon the international community to take concrete action by adhering to the “Telefood Project”, promoted by FAO, in order to launch international initiatives aimed at collecting funds for sustainable development projects in favour of the world’s poorest regions. With respect to this, the Republic of San Marino, within the commitments undertaken to achieve the Millennium Development Objectives set by the United Nations and attaching great importance to the problems of world poverty and malnutrition, has embraced Diouf’s plea by allocating funds for a Project on Food Security in favour of women from Aképé, a village in the Republic of Togo in order to allow them to diversify their agricultural activities and increase sheep farming. During today’s meeting with the Prince of Liechtenstein, the San Marino authorities recalled the common commitment of Small States in the humanitarian field, which is reflected by common initiatives, and stated once again their willingness to pursue this form of international cooperation further.
