WoW delegation received by Pope Francis

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicola Renzi, has participated today at the audience granted by the Holy Father in St Peter's Square to a delegation of "Wheels on Waves" (WoW), a project which is strongly supported by the Government of the Republic of San Marino.

The project was launched to promote respect for the rights of disabled people and spread a message of peace and equality, by breaking down psychological and physical barriers.

The high patronage of Their Excellencies the Captains Regent and the collaboration of this Ministry are a tangible sign of support to the aim pursued by the project, which contributes to the dissemination of the content of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Moreover, San Marino, one the first countries to ratify this important international instrument, promoted the direct delivery of this treaty by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterrez, last May, as well as today's ceremony, during which the promoter of the event, Andrea Stella, has presented this remarkable convention to Pope Francis.

The parchment arrived in Italy a few weeks ago on board the first catamaran in the world accessible to the disabled, "Lo Spirito di Stella", after an unusual ocean crossing which started from Miami last April and is expected to reach Trieste next October.

Andrea Stella handed the parchment together with a present specially created for the occasion and had a brief talk with Pope Francis, who, with his usual kindness, expressed warm and praiseworthy words for this initiative in support of the weakest in society.

Minister Renzi has personally participated in the event to demonstrate the strong interest of the institutions to the issue of disability. At the same time, he has accompanied the delegation before the Pontiff to reaffirm the excellent bilateral relations between the Republic and the Holy See and underline the high recognition of the Holy Father for this social and humanitarian initiative. It was a moment of great emotion and, for the entire delegation in a packed St. Peter's Square, the culmination of a demanding but exciting project.
