A meeting of senior officials from the countries of the "Uniting for Consensus"(UfC) group was held today in Rome, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss the reform of the UN Security Council. The Republic of San Marino was represented by the Ambassador to Italy, Daniela Rotondaro, the Ambassador to the United Nations, Damiano Beleffi, and the Director of Political Affairs of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Federica Bigi.
Uniting for Consensus is a group of countries from different regions of the world (Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, San Marino, Spain, Turkey) that has been campaigning for a fair reform of the Security Council for years.
In particular, the UfC is promoting the creation of additional non-permanent elective seats ("long-term'" and "two-year" seats) that would allow for greater turnover and improve access to the Security Council for UN member states, ensuring that all voices are heard. This proposal aims to make the Security Council more democratic, representative and transparent.
For the Republic of San Marino, this reform is particularly urgent, also in light of the most recent events, and is a guarantee of a greater process of democratisation.
The purpose of the meeting is to encourage greater consolidation within the UfC Group which could allow for outstanding issues to be resolved and for its position to be updated.
The meeting, held in an atmosphere of cooperation and cohesion, was an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the UfC countries to work together to achieve further results and to adapt the Security Council to the challenges of the 21st century.
