Destination Country

San Marino citizens who intend to travel abroad for tourism or business purposes are invited to read the information contained in this section, which is provided without any guarantee of completeness. When travelling abroad for other purposes, it is advisable to contact the Embassy or Consulate of the country of destination directly.

Please note that ordinary passports are issued by the Passport Office at the Vital Statistics Office (Borgo Maggiore Office Centre - 196, Via 28 luglio - Phone number 0549.88.22.37-38-09 - segreteria.passaporti@pa.sm).


Health insurance is compulsory in some countries.  However, even where it is not compulsory, taking out an insurance policy is always recommended.


Before departure and during the trip, it is advisable to check for updates in Italian on the safety of the place and travel restrictions on the website www.viaggiaresicuri.it of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Loss or theft of documents


In the event of loss or theft abroad of their passport or travel document, San Marino citizens must comply with the following rules:


Go to the local police authorities to report the theft or loss of the document;

Contact the competent Italian consular office (see the contact details on the website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to request the issue of an emergency travel document (ETD), by submitting a copy of the theft or loss report, two passport photos and a travel ticket, if available.


The payment of fees and any reimbursement of expenses incurred by the Italian consular office will be borne by the applicant.


Following the necessary checks, the Italian consular office will issue the emergency travel document (ETD), based on the agreements in force between the Foreign Affairs Department of San Marino and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
