The 174th Session of the FAO Council, strongly influenced by international tensions, is taking place today.

During the session, the Member States reiterated that food, water and humanitarian aid should not be used as instruments of pressure, but they should be guaranteed beyond all measure.

It was also reiterated that FAO is a specialised organization and debates should not be “politicised”. However, the international situation still had a strong impact on the Council's work.

San Marino was unanimously supported to serve a further term as Chair of the Appeals Committee, an internal justice mechanism dealing with labour law for FAO and World Food Programme (WFP) staff. Venezuela and Pakistan were appointed as Alternate Chairs.
