News 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 21 December 2023

The Audience granted by Their Excellencies the Captains Regent, H.E. Filippo Tamagnini and H.E. Gaetano Troina, on the special occasion of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was held this morning at the Government Building. It was introduced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, and the Minister of Education and Culture, Andrea Belluzzi, and it was also attended by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Marcello Beccari.

The Official Audience is part of the aforementioned celebrations and aims to raise awareness among the population, particularly the younger generations, of the culture of respect for human rights.

Indeed, the Universal Declaration has shaped the history of mankind, since it is the main text outlining the inalienable rights that must be enjoyed by every individual; it is considered the basis of international human rights law and its principles have been incorporated in numerous international treaties.

In his introductory speech, Minister Beccari, who promoted the initiatives commemorating the 75th anniversary, stressed the importance of supporting the younger generations in their growth and education, and of making them aware and sensitive to the principles on which the Republic of San Marino and the International Community were founded. "With regard to this, I believe," continued Minister Beccari, "that the hope for a better future lies precisely in the growth and education provided during childhood and adolescence, and in the ability of the political forces and institutions of each country to meet their needs and demands."

The Audience was attended by the managers of San Marino schools of all levels, who were provided with teaching material and publications that had been handed over to Their Excellencies the Captains Regent on the occasion of their participation last week in a high-level event in Geneva, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On the occasion of this significant anniversary, the Captains Regent handed over to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, a copy of the Declaration of the Citizens' Rights and Fundamental Principles of San Marino Legal System, which will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary in 2024, and they highlighted the numerous interconnections existing between the San Marino "Constitutional Charter" and the Universal Declaration.
