News Hearing of the Palestinian Ambassador to San Marino by the Permanent Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Affairs 14 January 2025

Abeer Odeh, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to the Republic of San Marino took the floor at the public meeting of the Permanent Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Affairs, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, of the members of the Parliamentary Commission and the public.

Following the introduction by the President of the Parliamentary Commission, Michele Muratori, Minister Beccari recalled the recent developments that have led to today's meeting, emphasising that San Marino Institutions and people strongly supported the idea of a gradual recognition of the State of Palestine.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also reiterated that the first step in this process started with the official presentation of Ambassador Odeh's Letters of Credence to the Captains Regent, which will be followed by the appointment of a San Marino Ambassador to Palestine.

“The Republic of San Marino is a fortunate country - said Minister Beccari - which has been able to maintain its freedom and autonomy not only in times of peace but also during the most difficult moments of its centuries-long history, and can now boast a long tradition. On the contrary, Palestine has had more troubled times and has been conditioned by external events that have undermined the self-determination of the Palestinian people, causing the unnecessary loss of life that we are sadly witnessing”.

Ambassador Abeer Odeh outlined the situation in Palestine and the Gaza Strip, presented the main historical milestones leading up to today, as well as the ongoing human rights violations to which Palestinian citizens are subjected. Finally, Ambassador Odeh expressed gratitude to San Marino for choosing to undertake this important process of recognition of Palestine, which would be a clear message to end the conflict and set an example that building a more peaceful, just and equitable world is possible.

“San Marino is a country devoted to dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes, and can never accept the use or threat of force against a People who wish to self-determine within a territory - said Minister Beccari. Ambassador Odeh's hearing by the Permanent Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Affairs testifies to San Marino's concrete political commitment that is in line with its history, and demonstrates the attention San Marino pays to the values of peace, protection of human rights and peaceful coexistence between States, as well as its willingness to debate on this issues among members of Parliament”.
